Dear Subscriber,

A great many of you are reading this on the MLive web site, while some of you saw this link on social media, and clicked on it there. Others will see it for the first time in their Sunday printed edition.

But two weeks ago, my weekly column was sent to our list of subscribers for MLive newsletters, which are another convenient way for our readers to stay abreast of the best journalism being done at our eight local newspapers, and statewide political, sports and trending news teams.

John Hiner is the vice president of content for MLive Media GroupPlease forgive me if it takes a while to memorize all of your names – that list numbers in the tens of thousands.

These are readers - like you - who have taken the opportunity to customize the news they see by selecting newsletters focused on a particular topic, or that round up news and go out on a schedule so they are there reliably in their email inbox.

This Letter from the Editor newsletter, which delivers to inboxes on Thursday morning, joins a roster that includes a robust morning briefing newsletter; afternoon news roundup newsletters for each of our eight newspaper markets in the state; a politics newsletter; a sports evening roundup; periodic breaking news newsletters; a newsletter on travel deals; and local obituaries.

You can see the list and sign up for any or all on our newsletter subscription page.

One of the founding principles of MLive Media Group when we launched as a new, combined media company in 2012 was to “follow our audience.” As reading habits changed, and technology afforded new ways for people to access information, we knew that it would be essential to be adept at providing news across many platforms.

We anticipated the explosive growth in social media use, and we now have more than 1 million followers across our social media accounts. We still have an avid reader base for our printed newspapers, and appreciate how their subscriptions support our journalism. Tens of thousands of those subscribers access those newspapers via e-editions, allowing them to read from digital devices when it is convenient for them.

And while email certainly is not a cutting-edge technology, its use is expanding across all media as readers have shown they appreciate the option of having customized offerings delivered to them, and the ability to read at their leisure.

Our latest newsletter – this letter from me each week – is intended to be a conversation about how MLive journalists do their jobs, to highlight the value that this journalism provides our communities and readers, and to invite you to share your thoughts and suggestions about our work.

For me, it connects me with a known, consistent base of our most committed readers. Readers who take the time to consume a lot of our offerings, and many of whom take the time to write thoughtful emails back about what moves them, what concerns them, and even to offer news tips.

In the hustle and bustle of internet life, sometimes it’s good to slow down and connect at a more thoughtful and personal pace. I appreciate you having me in your inbox, and look forward to continuing this conversation each week.

Sincerely,

John Hiner
