Letter from the Editor Dear Reader,
This past year, MLive has explored ways to know our readers better, from surveys to subscription packages.
The goal is to know what you need and want from our content, and how our relationship between news provider and reader can be improved. This column is one of those relationship builders.
Starting Monday, we plan to learn more about those of you who value our political and election coverage. In order to do that, we’re going to ask nonsubscribers to register to read stories about the election, the results, and any of the aftermath until results are settled. There’s no fee; you’ll just need to sign up (it’s easy, and instructions are below this column).
If you’re one of our paying subscribers now, or are already a registered user to our digital offerings, you’re good to go – just make sure you’re logged in.
As you know, earlier this year MLive began marking our best journalism Subscriber Exclusive, and required registration and a paid subscription to be accessed. You can identify those stories by the “key” icon next to headlines on our website and in our apps.
In the run-up to this most consequential of Election Days, some of our political coverage has been marked Subscriber Exclusive. However, beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, we will make all election coverage open to all readers.
Simply complete a one-step registration process, and you will have access until all election results are settled. This won’t allow access to non-election-related Subscriber Exclusives – that requires a paid subscription.
Current subscribers, digital and print, can access all MLive content without re-registering.
If you’d like to register now, call up any MLive story, or go to the MLive.com home page, and click on the blank face icon in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Then select “Create Account” and follow the instructions. It’s that easy.
The good news is that some 150,000 of MLive’s most dedicated readers already are registered on our site, and those who have should have immediate access to all election coverage starting Monday.
Registration – even if that’s all you choose to do at this point – benefits MLive and you, because it helps us shape coverage that is more in tune with your interests. It also helps us deliver more relevant information directly to you. One example of this came two weeks ago, when we were able to send an email newsletter with our Voters Guide directly to readers who have shown past interest in our political coverage.
As we get to know you better, our content and how we can deliver it improves, as well. That’s always a worthy goal. But in this coming week, it seems essential.

Here are some answers to questions you may have about registering to read our election coverage:
Is any election content available without registering? If news occurs that we feel is vital to public safety or well-being, we will make that available without the need to register.
If I’m a subscriber, do I have to register again? No. An MLive.com subscriber simply needs to sign in to the website. Same goes for a subscriber to one of our eight newspaper titles who already added free digital access to their subscription. Print subscribers who don’t yet have digital access can add it at https://myaccount.mlive.com/. They should click on the blue “Activate” button and follow the prompts.
Who can I talk with if I have trouble registering and signing in to MLive.com? You can email customercare@mlive.com or call 616-222-5411.
