Dear Yogi, The connection between our emotions and the physical body is fascinating. Emotions like anger, sadness, joy, or jealousy all have a physical expression – they influence our body temperature, heartbeat, breathing, and more. They also spark mental reactions. Yet, we often don’t allow ourselves to fully express them – maybe because it doesn’t feel like the “right time,” or because we were taught that certain emotions aren’t acceptable. When we suppress our emotions, the body tenses and stores this energy. Over time, this trapped emotional charge can drain us physically and mentally. Emotions need to move – to be felt and released. Think of the relief after a good cry or the lightness after a deep belly laugh. Yoga can stir emotions and offer a safe space to feel and release them, whether through a sweaty Vinyasa Flow, breathwork, or simply sitting in stillness and observing what arises.
