Good morning. Temperatures will be in the high 50s to low 60s with mostly sunny skies throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

The ‘total chaos’ caused by a landlord who put tenants in a condemned building with no heat
  • Jolyn Whitney and Edwin Fogg were desperate for a place to live when landlord Rick Lockwood offered them an apartment on the third floor of a building on Horton Street in downtown Lewiston. They were being evicted from their nearby home for falling behind on rent and worried they’d be homeless if they couldn’t find a cheap place quickly, they said.

So for $500 a month, the couple endured the building’s disrepair without protest. It had holes in the walls. No hot water. Peeling paint left a pattern on the door frames that resembled alligator skin. And piles of crumbled sheetrock and debris from unfinished construction sat in the halls, according to city documents, photographs, and interviews with officials and tenants.

How Paul LePage came around to giving a weighty endorsement in Maine’s 2nd District race
  • It’s unclear what role LePage will play in the race, but his early backing could give Dale Crafts an instant shot of credibility with donors and party activists unfamiliar with him. The endorsement may be the biggest one a Republican can get in a primary. LePage remains beloved in his party.

Town councilor says building new Bar Harbor school a ‘one-time deal’

  • Bar Harbor officials are exploring whether to build a new elementary school on the site of existing downtown athletic fields and facilities near the corner of Park and Main streets, and they want to find out if there is enough room for the fields and a school.

School officials have been considering for months what to do about the Conners Emerson School, which consists of two separate, aging buildings.
Bangor voters will have their say on a $6 million proposal to renovate City Hall
  • The renovation would remake City Hall's lobby and replace the building's heating and ventilation system. The project would alter where residents pay their taxes, register their cars and access other services on the building's first floor, while making other improvements to better serve people with disabilities.
When the winds blew hardest on Deer Isle, two guys with chainsaws knew just what to do
  • Two Deer Isle residents spent much of their time Thursday and Friday with their chainsaws in hand, helping residents clear fallen trees and limbs from their properties before official crews could make it to them.

“They take it upon themselves to make locals happy, but really they should not be doing it,” Stonington's public works foreman said. “If the tree is up above you and they turn on the power and you don’t know, you light up like a Christmas tree."
