Good morning. Temperatures will be in the high 50s and low 60s with mostly cloudy skies throughout the state.

Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

The social movement behind Lewiston’s crackdown on unsafe housing
  • When Shanna Cox moved from Mechanic Falls to Lewiston in the spring of 2009, she looked at 26 apartments before she found a rental where she felt comfortable living with her 4-year-old twins. At unit after unit, she said, something appalled her: trash in the staircases, evidence of vermin, a person passed out in the hallway, the odor of urine wafting through the building. By the time she found a place on the corner of Walnut and Bartlett streets, she was fed up. And motivated.

Tenants such as Cox, frustrated with absentee landlords and the city’s apparent reluctance to enforce its housing safety rules, have played a key role in bringing about the policies and practices that are now reshaping Lewiston’s downtown.
Maine lawmakers want to pass new laws on vaping, guns and marijuana in 2020
  • If new bills are a window into the consciousness of lawmakers, then the Democratic-led 129th Legislature has vaping, guns and marijuana on their minds. The titles of approximately 400 bills proposed by legislators for the 2020 session were released last week, covering everything from protecting Mainers from future propane explosions to changing health care in Maine.

A Belfast man says post-Dorian Bahamas was ‘twice as bad’ as photos showed

  • After spending nearly two weeks helping make hurricane-battered houses watertight on Lubbers Quarters Cay in the Bahamas, Larry Jones came home weighing 10 pounds less and with burns on both knees from kneeling for days on metal roofs in the hot sun. Last month, the 68-year-old loaded up his pickup truck with medical supplies, batteries, solar chargers and more.
Bucksport man challenges law that barred him from having a gun because of marijuana possession
  • A 58-year-old man from Bucksport is challenging his conviction on a charge that he was prohibited from having a firearm after he was found with 5 1/2 ounces of marijuana when he was pulled over by the police for a traffic infraction last year.

His lawyer calls the law behind that conviction “unconstitutionally vague” because it effectively prohibited someone in possession of marijuana — a certified medical marijuana patient who can legally possess up to 8 pounds of the substance — from possessing a firearm.
Fall foliage expected to be at peak color this weekend in Maine

  • In just a matter of days, forests of Maine have exploded with vibrant color. The beauty of fall foliage is upon us, and it’s predicted to reach its peak throughout much of the state this weekend, Oct. 12 through Oct. 13.
The former spokeswoman for Paul LePage joined a 2020 GOP primary in Maine’s 2nd District
  • Adrienne Bennett highlighted her long-standing support for President Donald Trump and said U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, the incumbent Democrat in the swing district, "soft-spoken" and said he isn't as moderate as he couches himself. She is the second Republican to declare for the seat so far alongside former state Sen. Eric Brakey. Another former legislator is expected to declare this week.
Make this: A simple, hearty soup that can be easily customized

  • Cooler weather calls for soup around here, especially welcome for lunch or a quick supper with salad, biscuits or crusty bread. Substantial soup, like this one made with freshly dug potatoes and fine fat leeks, chicken broth and a splash of cream is just the ticket.
