LGBTQ+ bills clear Legislature

LGBTQ+ bills pass: The Louisiana Legislature has passed bills to outlaw gender-affirming health care for transgender minors; ban talk about sex and gender in school and let teachers ignore students' requests to be addressed by alternate pronouns. The bills now head to Gov. John Bel Edwards for his signature or veto. Here's 5 things to know about the transgender health ban. 


Reading tests: State lawmakers have agreed to require third graders to pass a reading test to advance to fourth grade, Tyler Bridges reports. The change is aimed at raising Louisiana's dismal literacy rates. A similar law was passed in Mississippi in 2013; reading scores there shot up dramatically afterward. 


Recall bill fails: An effort to change the rules for recalling an elected official in Louisiana has died – and the lawmaker who championed the changes faces threats from his former supporters, Sam Karlin reports. "My family is scared," said Rep. Paul Hollis, who is term-limited. Still, he said he hopes the Legislature revives the effort next year.
