Cultural agencies face federal cuts

Big changes coming: As the Trump administration is slashing federal spending in the name of removing bloat and waste, Louisiana's museums, libraries and cultural organizations are grappling with — or bracing for — dramatic cuts as well.

In addition to the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the institutions that have been notified of cuts include Tulane University, LSU, Southern University and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Museum and library officials say cuts to arts and culture institutions would be felt in myriad ways.

Hold the line: Gov. Jeff Landry’s spending plan for next fiscal year does not include the annual $2,000 stipends that teachers received for the past two years, or $1,000 stipends for school support staff. But several lawmakers said this week they won’t allow the state’s public educators to endure a pay cut when Louisiana’s education system is on the rise.

But to rescue those stipends, the Legislature needs to find nearly $200 million.
