Xpress Reviews WEB-FIRST REVIEWS OF BOOKS AND MEDIA T. Jefferson Parker's Swift Vengeance is one of two starred fiction titles this week. "Three-time Edgar Award winner Parker delivers another superb, fast-paced noir thriller. Readers of C.J. Box will enjoy the strong character development, while T.C. Boyle fans will appreciate the story line and the atmospheric California setting." Antisocial Media: How Facebook Disconnects Us and Undermines Democracy, by Siva Vaidhyanathan, is this week's starred nonfiction title. Vaidhyanathan "acknowledges all the rhetorically valid ways in which Facebook might offer emotionally fulfilling interactions (the author himself is a user), but he buttresses these emotive motivations with close readings of the filter bubble, monetization of all transactions on the platform, and even the inherent vice of 'good' business." In graphic novels, The Unsound, by Cullen Bunn, with illustrations by Jack T. Cole and Jim Campbell, is an "engaging, horrific tale...recommended especially for H.P. Lovecraft devotees.... [It also] offers something new for fans of the genre seeking works tinged with the supernatural." And in e-originals, "romance readers will love" Allison B. Hanson's The Work Wife. "Hanson (Help Wanted; Getting Down to Business) takes readers on a fun journey of learning how fast friends can turn into something more." See All Xpress Reviews››› |
