Inquest findings: A New South Wales coroner has recommended more training and education for police officers following an inquest into the death of an intoxicated man in the Hunter Valley. Anthony Gilbert, 41, died of acute alcohol intoxication in January 2019. An inquest heard police dropped him off at his family's Dungog home and his mother found him lying unresponsive on the front steps the following morning. Dawn service: Thousands of people attended Anzac Day commemoration services across the Hunter region on Tuesday, with the biggest attendance at the Newcastle foreshore dawn service. Residents says the four gun salute at Fort Scratchley could be heard across several suburbs. Price rises or blackouts? The Liddell Power Station has reached the end of its life after helping light NSW for more than 50 years. But will its closure cause blackouts or power prices to rise? You can read about it here. Desert rescue: A Newcastle family of four was a week into a school holiday trip when the four-wheel drive they were in broke down near Poeppel Corner, where the South Australia, Queensland and Northern Territory borders meet. It took five days for the family to be rescued. This is their story. Mall demolitions: The City of Newcastle says buildings in the city's mall need to be demolished as soon as possible because of their state and concerns about anti-social behaviour. A soon-to-be-lodged development application will be expedited to allow for demolition work to begin. Buildings in the Hunter Street Mall which once housed retail stores and a food court are among those which will be demolished. Labour force data: The Hunter's labour force has grown to a record-high, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics Regional Labour Force data. For the first time, more than 400,000 people are employed or actively looking for work across the region. Business Hunter chief executive Bob Hawes says it's good news, but workforce challenges still lay ahead for the region in sectors such as energy transition. Battery power: Origin Energy says a super battery being built at the Eraring power station site should come online by the end of 2025. The company will invest about $600 million on the first stage of the battery project, with work expected to begin within weeks. Jets go down: It's unlikely the Newcastle Jets will make the A-League men's finals after going down to the Central Coast Mariners 3-1 in the F3 Derby. Newcastle would need to win its final game of the season by a big margin and have other results go its way to make the top six. Ponga makes return: Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga made a long-awaited return from multiple concussions against the Cowboys at the weekend. He made it through the game unscathed but it wasn't enough to get the Knights over the line, going down 18-16 on a hot night in north Queensland. |
