| | Life, Death and Golf
| No disrespect to our cover star Matt Fitzpatrick, but the most incredible golf performance of 2022 in Boston— or anywhere— belongs to Conner Willett. About a month after Fitzpatrick’s U.S. Open victory at The Country Club, Willett, 19, won the Massachusetts Amateur at Concord Country Club under nearly incomprehensible duress. He really hadn’t slept or eaten since his father’s death from a choking incident at the member-guest dinner at their club days before. After the trophy ceremony, Conner and his family went directly to the wake. “What golf demands of you, grief sometimes does, too. Both are lonely journeys, full of thoughts,” writes Chris Jones in “An Unfathomable Win.” Jones spent time with the Willetts when they were freshly processing their triumph and tragedy, and relays the strange details of a surreal week with wrenching care. Also in our latest issue, we look at death in a nonhuman context. These days, the first question for nearly every golf course considering renovation is which trees to cut down, and as our Architecture Editor Derek Duncan observes, “for most golfers there is nothing comforting—at first—about seeing the sacking of familiar friends.” In “The Last Stand,” Duncan goes deep to the roots of the history of golf course tree removalism and its many paradoxes, and offers a list of The 25 Greatest Trees in Golf. Even if my favorite tree in golf were still alive, I wouldn’t have fought for its inclusion on this list, though you can read about it here. Sorry if these subjects are painful, but there's a reason sad songs are streamed more often than upbeat ones. In what's hard lies the greatest beauty.
