From Early Cells to Multicellularity | LIFE is a NASA Research Coordination Network, dedicated to understanding life from early cells to multicellularity. The LIFE Research Coordination Network (RCN) is pleased to host a virtual seminar series that will showcase the research of leaders and emerging leaders in the field of astrobiology. The LIFE RCN Seminar Series is held the first Monday of every month from 1-2 PM EST and will consist of live-streamed short (30-40 min) talks followed by Q&A and discussion. This seminar series is open to all who share an interest in the co-evolution of life and the Earth from the appearance of the earliest cells to the advent of multicellularity. Vance Research Scientist NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory | | Geophysical Investigations of Habitability in Icy Ocean Worlds Ocean worlds in our solar system generally have more liquid water than in all of Earth’s oceans. These ice-covered worlds are the most promising places to look for extant life in our solar system, and they are important as analogues to watery exoplanets. I will review our group’s work exploring the habitability of ocean worlds, combining geophysical forward models with laboratory thermodynamic and transport data. Our most recent work examines available electrical conductivity data for aqueous solutions relative to expected precisions of planned magnetic induction investigations of Europa by NASA’s Europa Clipper and ESA’s JUpiter ICy satellites Explorer (JUICE) missions. Planned laboratory experiments can address the identified lack of data and needed 1% precision in the 1 g/kg range of concentration. | |
