Lighting Controls Association Announces New Course on Integration of Lighting Control with Building Automation

Today’s lighting control systems work alongside and may need to communicate with many other systems such as audio/visual (A/V), mechanical air handling (HVAC), life/safety, or computer networking (ITS).

When the majority of systems in a building communicate with and trigger each other, this is referred to as a building automation system (BAS), which can present intricate designs and require careful integration and coordination of design disciplines.

Authored by C. Webster Marsh, HLB Lighting Design, EE115: Integration and Building Automation defines today’s integration, how BAS are designed, and considerations for specifying integration and a BAS.

Lighting Controls Association Announces New Course on Lighting Control Protocols

The Lighting Controls Association (LCA) now offers EE305: Protocols as a new course in its popular Education Express program.

A lighting control protocol enforces the rules luminaires and devices use to communicate. One can ensure compatibility by reviewing which protocols are used in the lighting control system. A lighting controls design may not begin with a specific protocol in mind, but due to the constraints of each protocol, some protocols may be ideal while others may not.

Authored by C. Webster Marsh, HLB Lighting Design, EE305: Lighting Control Protocols surveys available protocols, how they work in a lighting control system, and specification considerations.

This course is registered with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continuing Education System (CES) for Learning Units (LU)/Health, Safety, Welfare (HSW) credits, and the National Council on Quality in the Lighting Professions (NCQLP) for Lighting Education Units (LEUs). It is also required reading to prepare for NALMCO’s Certified Lighting Controls Professional (CLCP) certification exam.
