Preorder Brisk Verse by Garrison KeillorWe are excited to announce the publication of BRISK VERSE, a brand-new collection of Garrison Keillor’s poetry. This compilation of almost 200 poems will take the reader through whimsy and tomfoolery, solemn thought-provoking lines, mischievous observations, and tons of fun. And it’s the perfect gift. (Father’s Day is coming up soon.) “Healthful. Invigorating. Good for reading aloud to friends and associates, neighbors, colleagues, bartenders, passersby, even strangers in libraries or on airplanes. One copy of this book will make you the life of the party, a welcome guest in any home, a person of fine taste who also relishes a good time.” Softcover, 240 pages, 7" x 10" Listen to the classic show from April 13, 1996This week, we revisit a classic show from 1996, originally performed live from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota, with The Turtle Island String Quartet and The New Coon Creek Girls. Highlights include Garrison singing “My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose,” “Hickory Nut Ridge” by the New Cook Creek Girls,” “Jacu” by the Turtle Island String Quartet, and both groups joining on “The L&N Don’t Stop Here Anymore.” Plus, Bertha’s Kitty Boutique, Mournful Oatmeal, Lonesome Radio Theater, The Lives of the Cowboys, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. Listen to the show. Since its inception in 1985, the Turtle Island Quartet has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings. Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles, and by devising a performance practice that honors both, the state of the art has inevitably been redefined. Cellist nonpareil Yo-Yo Ma has proclaimed TIQ to be “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground — authentic and passionate — a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today.” The group was founded in San Francisco in 1985. Personnel for this broadcast: Darol Anger, violin; Tracy Silverman, violin; Danny Seidenberg, viola; Mark Summer, cello The New Coon Creek Girls formed in 1979, carrying on the tradition of Lily May Ledford and the original Coon Creek Girls, who gained fame on the Renfro Valley Barn Dance in the 1930s. Though the lineup of the New Coon Creek Girls changed over the years, the quartet spent decades recording and performing, to the delight of bluegrass fans. The musicians for this broadcast: Vicki Simmons (bass), Dale Ann Bradley (guitar), Ramona Church Taylor (banjo), and Kathy Kuhn (fiddle). Keillor & CompanyWe’ve got a few Keillor & Company shows coming up and hope you can join us for a rare opportunity to see Garrison alongside Prudence Johnson and Dan Chouinard. It’s an evening of stand-up, storytelling, audience song, and poetry — plus some humorous reflections on turning 80. “His shows can, for a couple of hours, transform an audience of even so-called coastal elites into a small-town community with an intimacy only radio and its podcast descendants can achieve” —Chris Barton, LA Times April 26, 2024, at the Egyptian Theatre in Boise, Idaho, at 8 p.m. April 27, 2024, at the Fox Theater in Spokane, Washington, at 7:30 p.m. June 29, 2024, at the Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls, Michigan, at 7 p.m. MOTHERHOOD: A RADIO COLLECTIONA Prairie Home Companion celebrates that one person who manages to make you feel that you’re special and that you aren’t living up to your potential — all in the same sentence. Sketches, songs, and stories from Garrison and the regular cast cover the gamut of all that goes into and comes out of motherhood. Motherhood is a popular topic on A Prairie Home Companion, and not just on Mother’s Day. It’s about time someone gathered the best bits into an homage to Mom. This funny, affectionate, poignant collection honors the woman who gave up her own sense of self-worth for a life of mindless drudgery, day in and day out, all for you. The woman who sticks around when everyone else in your life turns away. Who insists “Don’t worry about me, I’m fine. All I need is to know that you’re happy.” Who doesn’t leave messages because motherhood is not about messages; it’s about love. Share the collection with your mom or give it to a mom you know. If you’re a mom yourself, hand it to your child and say, “Listen.” It’s the least he or she can do. Get the CDs. This is a FREE NEWSLETTER.
