London's getting a brand new country music festivalCowboy boots at the ready… London’s first outdoor festival of country music is do-si-doing its way to Tooting Common. Say howdy to Country on the Common. This two day celebration of all things country, roots and blues runs 5-6 July, offering line dancing, axe-throwing, and lasso lessons — on top of a sensational line up of live music. Country on the Common’s inaugural headliners are British duo The Shires and singer-songwriter (and Schitt’s Creek star) Noah Reid. Other musical highlights include Ward Thomas, One Night in Nashville, Kezia Gill and Toby Lee. There are also tributes to legends like Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift, Johnny Cash and Shania Twain. With yee-haw worthy food and drink (think BBQ, Tex-Mex, whiskey and craft beer) plus family friendly fun in the form of horseshoe tossing, s’mores toasting and circus hijinks, you can really make a day of it (or a weekend of it, if you fancy booking both days). And did we mention that there’s a rodeo bull?! A miscellany of London mapsTravel back in time with the help of a beautifully curated collection of historical maps of London. Modern London Maps by Vincent Westbrook brings together over 60 20th century maps, featuring roads, railways, green spaces and pictorial depictions of the city as it was at various points over the last 120+ years. Iraqi-inspired cookingCrispy chicken thighs with harissa chickpeas. Eastern Mess (which swaps out the strawberries of the Etonian version for flavours of rose, raspberry, pistachio and mint). Just a couple of the incredible dishes dreamt up by Suzie Bakos for The Little Sauce’s Iraqi Spring Supper, which takes place at The Hare & Hounds on 29 May. London’s ‘first’ Tube lineDid you know that a little-known Tube tunnel runs under the Thames beside the Tower of London? The ill-fated, quarter-mile-long Tower Subway was excavated all the way back in 1869, and might be considered the world's first tube railway. You can read all about it over on Londonist: Time Machine. Asma Khan x akub collabModern Palestinian restaurant akub kicks off a series of brunch collaborations with Asma Khan, of Darjeeling Express fame. Head to akub this May to tuck into a refreshing spiced orange nagangi salad alongside a kadoo ka raita that combines roasted pumpkin with tomatoes, yoghurt, chilli and mint.
