LinkedIn Algorithm Changes

Over the past month, I've been continuing to work on my LinkedIn tips video series, trying to answer some of the questions I am asked when I do LinkedIn training or work with clients to improve their LinkedIn presence.

LinkedIn has been making a lot of changes lately, and you may have seen that those changes are affecting how much reach you're getting on LinkedIn. This month's featured video talks about those algorithm changes (see below). I've also done some videos on the difference between disconnecting and unfollowing, when you should disconnect, and more.

Are you noticing changes in your performance on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is always trying to improve the algorithm to serve users content that is useful and informative for them. And some users will always try to “game” the system, which requires LinkedIn to keep making changes to try to stay ahead of that kind of behavior.

So what can you do to make sure you get the most out of LinkedIn? First and foremost, make sure you are always providing value to your audience. Be authentic and post information that is relevant to what you do.

The current issue of the American Bar Association's Law Practice Division's Law Practice magazine is the Big Ideas issue. My column in this issue talks about preparing for partnership. I find that too many law firms fail to adequately prepare their lawyers for partnership, and don't give enough guidance on the kinds of things lawyers who aspire to partnership should be doing to make themselves better law firm partners. This column gives my thoughts on what lawyers who want to be partners should be doing - and thinking about.

You may recall that my previous column, in the Management issue, talked about evaluating management skills. That column provided some suggestions on how to evaluate management skills for those who aspire to management positions and those who already hold them. This month's column is a follow up to that.

Second Edition with new tips

The Second Edition of How to Do More in Less Time: The Complete Guide to Increasing Your Productivity and Improving Your Bottom Line, which I co-authored with Daniel J. Siegel, is now available from the American Bar Association. When we started writing the new edition, we thought it would be an easy task, but we found that even though the concepts in the book are evergreen, there was a lot of updating that we needed to do to be in line with the way lawyers practice today. And we added material on videoconferencing, working from home and more.

My friend and colleague, Dennis Kennedy and I are proud to announce that our book, Make LinkedIn Work for You, A Practical Handbook for Lawyers and Other Legal Professionals is now available.
