Stocks are up big to kick off the first full trading week of the year, led by a better-than-1% bounce in the Nasdaq premarket. We have some Fed speakers lined up this week, JOLTS on Tuesday, and the biggest reports of the week include the ADP Employment Report and FOMC Minutes on Wednesday, and the Employment Situation on Friday. Volume should start to return as the week goes on, which will be welcome news after the low liquidity we’ve seen since Christmas. If the bond market (TLT) can turn higher, it will give the stock market some relief, but it hasn’t happened yet… The U.S. dollar is taking a big dive this morning, which is good for gold, crude and oil because it’s deflationary. But what I’m concerned about is we’re still in an uptrend while the bond market hasn’t broken higher. Gold has been sticking with its support, but I wouldn’t do any long trades until it reaches the $2,785 level. I’m not super bullish on gold just yet but more neutral, but I’m watching that key level to confirm the uptrend has resumed.
