At Litquake, we often pause to ask ourselves, lovingly of course, just who the hell we think we are? The answer is, we are you.
Intrepid. Last year, we heard from a devoted attendee about their struggle to read poetry, being forever seduced by another novel, another story to be read. For this reason, they try to attend Litquake's poetry readings whenever possible. It’s true, there is nothing like hearing poetry read aloud—whether it’s echoing in Grace Cathedral or sung-shouted in a parklet at the Lit Crawl.
Inspired. We read to grow closer to ourselves and each other. We read to find honest truths, and emotions both wrenching and heartening. We read to revel in that special intimacy, a moment when our eyes open and we are profoundly moved.
Connected. You are one of tens of thousands who gather each year at Litquake for classes, nights out, distraction, and engagement. Reading has never been a solitary endeavor—there’s always been you and the character, you and the author, but now through Litquake, you have all of us too.
For the reader, we believe literature is a medium for empathy-raising, for discovery, and for deep contemplation of the issues of the day. It connects us, it nourishes us—everyone deserves literature.
