Most entrepreneurs create a product... come up with a way to sell it (website etc)... then try to get their offer in front of people who will buy.
According to Russell, that’s a mistake.
What he recommends instead...
...is to start by finding out where your traffic already is.
He does this by answering 2 questions:
“Who is your dream customer?” And, “Where are they hanging out?”
Once you answer that...all you have to do is to listen.
Check out the blogs your customer reads, the podcasts they listen to, the FB groups they’re in…
...and just listen to what your customers are frustrated or struggling with.
Then give them what they need.
This is exactly how Russell came up with his book Traffic Secrets, when he saw people were struggling to get traffic online…
Same with Clickfunnels, when he saw people frustrated by the technical challenge of creating marketing funnels.
As Russell puts it...
“Finding the market, seeing what they actually want, and giving them exactly what they asked for is the simplest way to make money.”
2. Become a Master Story Seller
Chances are you’ve heard me preach the importance of having a hook, story, and offer in your marketing messages…
Russell agrees.
In fact, he dedicated an entire chapter of Traffic Secrets to this topic.
The way he sees it, ALL effective advertising is based on these 3 elements.
Here’s Russell’s simple approach for creating ads...
First, he drops the hook… something that will stop his prospects scrolling on social media — or grab their attention in those first few seconds on YouTube.
Next, he has a small window to tell a story that accomplishes two purposes: a) to build a connection... b) to increase the perceived value of whatever he’s selling...
Finally, he makes an offer (click this button for a video, report, etc.) If you look, you’ll see this 1-2-3 formula everywhere.
It’s in every successful ad... every marketing email or podcast…
It’s even repeated at each step of a sales funnel…
From the initial ad, to the sales page, to each subsequent upsell and downsell page as you go through.
When Russell analyzes a funnel that’s not performing, there’s only 3 things he looks at to find the problem…
The hook, story, and offer.
3. The #1 Growth Secret Russell Learned from Dan Kennedy
Russell and I share a mutual respect and appreciation for the great Dan Kennedy…
But there’s one Kennedy lesson in particular which Russell claims is responsible for the growth of his entire business…
It goes like this…
Whoever can spend the most money to acquire a customer wins.
And although he didn’t fully grasp the concept at first…
Once Russell discovered the power of “upsells” to increase average order value, his profitability skyrocketed.
For example, in his Traffic Secrets book funnel it costs him less than $10 in FB ads to get a sale…
But thanks to the genius upsell and downsell flows within his funnel, he’s averaging $65 per order.
Which means he can spend up to $65 to acquire new customers without losing money.
Now I know this last idea can be a slippery one to wrap your head around (heck, even Russell didn’t catch on right away)...
But it’s a super important lesson to pay attention to.
