Interview With Jacqui Justice

DailyOM: Hi, Jacqui. Tell us about why it is important to limit or avoid sugar.

Jacqui Justice: It is important to limit sugar as much as possible for many reasons: sugar depletes our immune system, and too much of it will cause us to be acidic, which is very health-depleting. It also causes widespread inflammation throughout our body, which is connected to every chronic health issue we know. It is also highly addictive, causing us to crave more and more, which sets up a cycle that can be hard to stop. Digestion is affected in a negative way as sugar causes an imbalance of good and bad bacteria, which has many different symptoms: gas, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, and other digestive issues. Lastly, sugar can make us look older, due to the fact that it causes glycosylation of proteins, which causes wrinkling and sagging of skin.

DailyOM: Well, none of that sounds good. How do we avoid sugar, as it seems to be in everything?

JJ: First, by staying away from obvious sugary foods (candy, baked goods, most desserts, soda, junk food), plus highly refined and processed foods, and then by reading labels to identify added sugars in foods. This can be tricky because there are so many names for sugar. In Lesson 2 we review all forms and names of hidden sugars so you can be informed and make the best choices.

DailyOM: Are there any natural healthy sweeteners we can use as a substitute, and how do you address this in the course?

JJ: Absolutely! There are plenty of natural healthy sweeteners that can be used to sweeten beverages, desserts, baked goods, and recipes where a little sweetness enhances the dish. My favorites are raw and organic honey, organic applesauce, monk fruit, date sugar, and coconut sugar. Also, using fruit by itself is a great way to naturally sweeten a dish. Check out my Fool's Cobbler in Lesson 10, which uses fresh pears and mixed berries to add sweetness that usually is loaded with tons of refined sugar. So delish!

DailyOM: What benefits do we receive by avoiding or limiting sugar in our diets?

JJ: Oh, there are so, so many, and they are life-changing to say the least! You can expect to feel more energetic, see a reduction in weight, have improved digestion, better sleep, and a stronger immune system. You will also see the benefit of having more steady, consistent energy throughout the day without those peaks and dips, and, of course, your cravings will go away too.

DailyOM: Most people get sugar cravings at some point during the day. Why does this happen to our body?

JJ: Besides having a diet that's high in sugar (eating it causes you to crave more of it), several lifestyle and dietary factors can cause you to crave sugar. If your diet is too carb-heavy, you will crave it. Stress and hormone imbalances, along with nutritional deficiencies such as magnesium, zinc, and B-vitamins, can also lead to cravings. If you eat too much salt, you may crave the opposite, which is sweet. Proper sleep and drinking plenty of water will also help curb sugar cravings as well. Finally, gut dysbiosis, which is an imbalance of good and bad gut bacteria, can cause cravings because sugar is food for bad bacteria.

DailyOM: Does avoiding sugar mean cutting out natural sugars in fruit, veggies, and dairy products?

JJ: Definitely not! Foods with naturally occurring sugars, like fruits, some veggies, and dairy products are nutrient-dense because they also contain many health-promoting nutrients and break down into sugar at a slower rate. Foods that contain natural sugars, when eaten in balance with other healthy foods, are always health promoting. Get your sweet fix with these guys. Ultra-low-glycemic fruits like berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries) are low in sugar and high in antioxidants and fiber, making them the best choice in the fruit category. Organic, unsweetened kefir, a fermented dairy product, is also low but high in protein and good fats, and rich in health-promoting probiotics. Combine the two, and you have a great way to start your day!

DailyOM: Walk us through the journey of this course and what it will be like for our readers.

JJ: The course begins by giving students a solid understanding of why it's important to kick the sugar habit, especially added sugars, and how to identify them in your food so you can easily avoid them and make healthier choices. Students will gain a greater awareness of how much sugar they are actually consuming in their everyday diets, even when they think they are eating healthy.

Students will learn why artificial sweeteners are not the answer either and which natural ones are much healthier choices. In addition to all the information, students will also get a Blood Sugar Balancing Plan that outlines how and what to eat to stabilize blood sugar and crush cravings. Included in the plan are 20-plus delicious, low- and no-sugar recipes to replace sugar-rich recipes. At the end of the 10-day course, students will not only have a better understanding of why they should cut back on sugar and how, but they should be experiencing all the benefits that come with living a sweet life without it. How's that for a bonus!
