Talk with the Forward’s Archivist Chana Pollack about the Catskills

The Catskills made a big impression on readers of “The Forverts,” (Forward) the Jewish immigrant community’s Yiddish paper of record. Each summer, subscribers jammed the newspaper’s switchboards to ensure their beloved daily was delivered to their Borscht Belt boarding houses, bungalow colonies and resorts. Loaded with classified ads for Catskills farmland, boarding houses, hotels and even Yiddish summer camps, Forverts readers and writers found a home in the Borscht Belt for well over a century. Join archivist Chana Pollack on a journey through the historic Forward archives and see what the tumult was all about. The free event will be followed by a screening of the film, Dirty Dancing.

The Forward and J Street Present ‘Live from the DNC’

Live from Chicago and against the backdrop of the Democratic National Convention, join J Street and the Forward for a conversation diving deep into the challenges facing Democrats amid the Israel-Hamas war.

J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami will moderate the discussion featuring pollster and American Jewish public opinion expert Jim Gerstein, the Forward’s editor-in-chief Jodi Rudoren and a Member of Congress to be announced soon.

Together, our panelists will examine the impact of the conflict — and the Biden administration's handling — on the political landscape. We’ll discuss how Democratic candidates are balancing competing pressures in the party, and why the path toward peace relies on defeating Donald Trump and electing pro-Israel, pro-peace, diplomacy-first leaders like Vice President Kamala Harris.

How the Left Can Fight Antisemitism

Since Oct. 7 and the outbreak of war in Gaza, debates around antisemitism have become more polarized than ever. Join Arno Rosenfeld, the Forward’s enterprise reporter, for a conversation with Shane Burley and Ben Lober, the authors of a new book proposing a “progressive, intersectional approach” for stopping antisemitism.

Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism uses personal stories, historical deep-dives, front-line reporting, and interviews with leading change-makers, with the aim of helping readers understand how antisemitism works, what’s missing in contemporary debates, and how to build true safety through solidarity, for Jews and all people.

Navigating a Season of Judgment and Reckoning

This discussion will help us find clarity and vision as we stand on the doorstep of the High Holidays and election season. Our panelists will guide us as we grapple with this season of judgment, reckoning, and uncertainty — the uncertainty we feel as Jews and as Americans. This discussion is being convened to inspire dialogue while challenging each of us to expand our perspective by listening. We hope that this discussion will serve as a spiritual buoy during this tumultuous season.
