| Good morning, and welcome to the Saints Insider Newsletter for Saturday, August 26. Let's get together and have a difficult time trying to assemble a 53-man roster, shall we? Decisions, decisionsThe Saints Insider crew got together with pen and paper to try and whittle the Saints roster down from its current 89 players down to the 53-player limit it will have to reach by Tuesday of next week. And, you know what? It was hard! And the wild part about it is that, even though it was difficult ... we all ended up with pretty much the same 53 players. We tried to do this the way the Saints will do it: In a collaborative way. All of us picked the players we believed to be locks (we agreed upon 38 of them), then we accepted five more as safe based on consensus (two of the three picked them as locks). That left 10 roster spots to fill with one preseason game to go. Our Saints crew got into who they chose for the spots and why. Just for kicksAll three of us had kicker Wil Lutz on our 53-man rosters, but as columnist Jeff Duncan noted in his observations from Friday's practice, the kicker competition is still very much alive. Lutz still feels like the favorite to keep the job he's held since 2016, but rookie kicker Blake Grupe is giving the veteran everything he's got in camp. Oh, and Shaq Davis may have earned himself a new nickname from his teammates. What we're watching for The Saints close out their preseason tomorrow against the Texans, and our columnist Rod Walker shares the things he's keeping his eye on here — including a chance for the Saints to make a bit of meaningless franchise history.
