Folks, I don't know if you realize this, but it's September. That means football season -- the real football season -- is officially upon us. John Breech, like so many of us here at CBS Sports, is so enthused about this that he forgot to show up for work today. So I, Cody Benjamin, will be happy to guide you through all the latest from around the NFL.
This is the Pick Six Newsletter. Now let's get to it. (And please, do yourself a favor and make sure you're signed up to receive this newsletter every day! You don't want to miss our daily offerings of everything you need to know around the NFL.)
We've got Cam Newton predictions, an All-Preseason Team rollout, Super Bowl picks, and much more:
  1. Today's show: Cutdown-day reactions, plus Cam Newton predictions
Tuesday was a busy one in the NFL, with all 32 teams trimming rosters to 53 players for the new season. Ryan Wilson and John Breech joined Will Brinson for a live reaction show on the "Pick Six NFL Podcast" to break everything down. The headlining topic: Cam Newton's release from New England. Some highlights from the guys' instant analysis:
  • Brinson thinks it's very possible the Patriots went to Newton to inform him he'd lost the starting QB job to Mac Jones, then Newton requested and received his release.
  • Along those lines, he doesn't foresee Cam finding a new home anytime soon, considering Newton likely wants a starting opportunity: "The Texans would be the only option," Brinson said, though Breech countered that he wouldn't overtake Tyrod Taylor as Houston's Week 1 starter anyway.
  • Wilson believes Newton may have had a real market had he been cut by the Patriots sooner, suggesting teams like the Giants and Panthers would be "marginally better" with him as their starting QB.

2. Insider notes: Saints, Steelers among logical Cam Newton destinations
Speaking of Cam, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora confirms the QB is still very interested in playing this year; he is, after all, fresh off a competition for a starting job after taking a team-friendly deal to return to New England. While Newton's initial market could be "tepid," La Canfora sees these teams as logical suitors entering 2021:
  1. Saints: Sean Payton is an innovative thinker with no long-term money tied into the position
  2. 49ers: If Jimmy Garoppolo is cut or traded, Newton would make proven insurance for Trey Lance
  3. Steelers: The backup job has been up for grabs, and Cam fits their physical run game
  4. Falcons: Matt Ryan might not mind situational relief a la Drew Brees/Taysom Hill
  5. Buccaneers: An upgrade of Tom Brady's backup, and a heck of a storyline
3. All-Preseason Team: Chiefs, Vikings headline 25-man all-star lineup
With the new season right around the corner, we rolled out our very own All-Pro team, of sorts, except instead of recognizing just past performance, we also factored in 2021 projections. The result: Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs led the way with five different representatives, but some other teams -- like the Vikings, with three -- were also surprisingly well-represented.
Here's a sneak peek at the 2021 All-Preseason Team, with a look at the offensive lineup:
  • QB: Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs)
  • RB: Dalvin Cook (Vikings)
  • WR: Davante Adams (Packers)
  • WR: Tyreek Hill (Chiefs)
  • WR: Justin Jefferson (Vikings)
  • TE: Travis Kelce (Chiefs)
  • LT: Trent Williams (49ers)
  • LG: Quenton Nelson (Colts)
  • C: Corey Linsley (Chargers)
  • RG: Zack Martin (Cowboys)
  • RT: Ryan Ramczyk (Saints)
4. Why the Browns can win the Super Bowl in 2021
Cleveland, the hype is real. A year after making a long-anticipated return to the playoffs, the Browns are legitimate title contenders in 2021. Or at least that's according to resident Dawg Pound expert Josh Edwards, who outlines three reasons the Browns can reach -- and win -- the big game this season, the first being offensive continuity:
Turnover has inhibited the Browns' franchise for two decades, so it would be reckless to understate how important that it is for the team to return all 11 starters from last season. Quarterback Baker Mayfield showed a lot of growth in head coach Kevin Stefanski's system over the course of the year ... There is no debate that Cleveland's offense wants to rely on a strong ground presence to take pressure off the quarterback and set up bootleg throws down the field. There is no substitute for having comfort and Mayfield should have that as he enters his second season in a system for the first time in his career.
5. Super Bowl odds, bets: Chiefs are favorites, Washington worth a look
Jordan Dajani rounded up CBS Sports staff picks for Super Bowl LVI, with a focus on the latest title-winning odds. The Chiefs, the reigning runners-up, were the favorites to go the distance this year, though some long shots like Seattle and Washington also garnered a couple of best bet votes. Here are the top picks among NFL staffers for best Super Bowl bets:
  • Chiefs (+500) -- 6 votes
  • Buccaneers (+650) -- 2 votes
  • Bills (+1200) -- 2 votes
  • 49ers (+1400) -- 2 votes
6. Worst-to-first candidates: 49ers are a safe bet to bounce back
Every year, the NFL witnesses at least a couple big shifts in the standings. With an eye on teams most likely to go from worst to first in 2021, John Breech has identified the 49ers as a safe bet to return to title contention after a 6-10 fourth-place finish a year ago:
With a healthy roster, there's no reason the 49ers can't emulate what they did in 2019 when they won the division on their way to the Super Bowl. Although the NFC West is arguably the toughest division in football, that might not end up being a big issue for the 49ers, who have gone 8-4 in the division over the past two years.
I'm not exactly sure what Kyle Shanahan has planned at the quarterback position this year -- start Jimmy (Garoppolo)? start Trey (Lance)? Go two-platoon like he did in the preseason? -- but whatever it is, it's not just going to keep me guessing, it's also going to keep his opponents guessing, which should work out in San Francisco's favor.
