Don’t pretend you’re not excited… PUBS are reopening this weekend
In Philip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials’, people’s souls are animal avatars called ‘daemons’. Londoners don’t have daemons. Londoners have pubs. The Farrow & Ball gastro shack. The sticky-carpeted, ‘free pool’ local. The ‘Downfall’-style estate bunker. The one with plants. All have their place in London’s boozy pantheon, and all have been shut for months. That’s about to change, as our boozers are coming back . Not as they were, all jostly and full of loud berks shoving twenties at the barman. You’ll have to keep apart and you may have to book a table. But you will be able to buy a pint. In a pub. And drink it. In a pub. And then do it again. Hallelujah! Here’s where to raise a glass…

Tonight, 7pm The Rules of Contagion at The Royal Institution
When it comes to viruses, outbreaks, epidemics, pandemics and other by-now-all-too-familiar infectious goings-on, Adam Kucharski is metaphorically up to his elbows in ’em. The associate professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who worked on the ebola nightmare (remember that one?), is giving this live talk from the Royal Institution in which he considers the curious – often apparently random – courses that diseases take. Everyone’s a flipping expert these days, so why not hear from an actual expert for a change?
The best of the rest:
Until Thursday, 7pm Brienne of Tarth – aka Gwendoline Christie – heads up a ravey take on Shakespeare’s barmy ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Today, noon Want something else to worry about? How about volcanoes? The Natural History Museum talks through the science of exploding mountains.

Wednesday, 7pm Sketch monkeys with Wild Life Drawing. Be prepared for them to be better than you at art.
