Good morning Voornaam, It says something that both corporate investment updates yesterday were related to assets in Europe, not SA. Tiger Woods decides to Just Do It - but with TaylorMade, not Nike. Get your 2024 financial story off to the right start by listening to Duma Mxenge of Satrix explain his views on personal finance and market concepts. There's a brand new Ghost Wrap podcast bringing you the latest on Sasol, ArcelorMittal, Sappi, Curro and British American Tobacco - available here. The Magic Markets podcast updates you on Meta and Microsoft. Local company news:
Anglo American and Sirius Real Estate are both looking to make investments. In both cases, the latest news relates to assets in Europe rather than South Africa. This isn't a surprise for Sirius, as the property fund has always been focused on Germany and more recently the UK. The latest acquisition is two properties in Germany. For Anglo American though, seeking opportunities in Finland doesn't say much for the local industry. Sure, they are targeting battery metals, but perhaps a friendlier local environment (like one with working electricity and railways) would prevent that distraction. Along with those updates, Ghost Bites also features Glencore putting a nickel mine into care and maintenance. Interestingly, nickel is one of the battery metals that mining houses have been chasing after as part of a transition to cleaner energy. The nickel market clearly hasn't gotten the memo, with prices going the wrong way. Jokes aside, supply and demand dynamics are exceptionally complicated. Finally, there's good news from Calgro M3. A combination of operational focus and vast share buybacks have resulted in a solid jump in HEPS. Get all the details in Ghost Bites>>> For an efficient and insightful update on local news, the Ghost Wrap podcast should be a staple on your favourite podcast player. Made possible by Mazars, the latest episodde needs just 6 minutes of your time to update you on Sasol, ArcelorMittal, Sappi, Curro and British American Tobacco. Get it here>>> International company news: Thanks to data and automation specialists B2IT, Magic Markets is all about "big tech" in the brand new show. Meta and Microsoft are both in the Magnificent Seven, with the latter having been criminally overlooked in the FAANG era. With eye-watering share price movements over the past year, we dug into the latest results from these giants in this podcast>>> Golf is pretty much the hardest sport on the planet. In case you've never played this wonderful game, perhaps the easiest way to understand this is by seeing the win rate of top players. At every single event, there are many different golfers who can win. The results are variable because the sport is so insanely difficult at that level. This is why Tiger Woods and his ridiculous win rate are the stuff of legend. Nike's business is built around athlete endorsements. It's therefore a pretty big deal that Tiger's recent split with Nike has led to a new apparel and footwear collaboration between Tiger and TaylorMade. Although the name Sun Day Red sounds contrived to me (he's always worn red on Sundays at tournaments), believe me there's nothing contrived about the man's popularity among sports enthusiasts. Michael Jordan hasn't played basketball in a very long time, yet Air Jordan is an exceptionally valuable brand. Tiger's rare appearances on the course probably won't impact the success of Sun Day Red. And the clincher? The deal is housed in a separate entity. Woods isn't just an endorsed athlete. He's well on his way to being a shareholder in a joint venture. Have a great day! |

Currencies, commodities and rates: TreasuryONE Market Update It's been a rather dull start to the week for the rand, trading in a tight range ahead of data releases in the US. US inflation is expected to drop to 2.9% in January from 3.4% in December, marking the lowest level since January 2021. Even though inflation may be slowing, that doesn't mean that the Fed is ready to cut rates - despite what the market is hoping for in May. Global oil production is increasing significantly. In 2023, the US achieved a surplus in petroleum trade (i.e. exported more than it imported) for the first time since records began being kept in 1994. Brazil is also increasing its supply. Although Middle East tensions are helping to prop up the price at the moment, the underlying supply/demand dynamics could put pressure on oil once that simmers down. Brent Crude is at $82 this morning. The rand is at R18.93, the US 10-year yield is at 4.18%, gold is at $2,019 and platinum ZAR is R16,792. As a Ghost Mail reader, you have a wonderful early bird opportunity to register for the 2024 post-budget panel discussion hosted by TreasuryONE, Econometrix and ETM Analytics. I absolutely cannot recommend this enough and I will also be attending to learn from the panel. Get it in your diaries now already by registering at this link>>> |
