The 2025 Mardi Gras season will be here before we know it. And this time, there will be more rules in Mobile regarding the handling of parade horses, reports AL.com's Patrick Darrington. Attention turned to horses during last year's events, when a horse collapsed during a Conde Cavaliers parade and was reportedly kicked and hit during efforts to get him back up. The new policies came together with help from the City of Mobile Animal Services Department, local veterinarians and more. They: -- Require medical evaluations for horses conducted by a veterinarian. -- Require riders to attend a basic riding training course and submit proof of training. |

I have good news for pickleball players in a couple of Alabama towns. AL.com's William Thornton reports that indoor pickleball franchises are being planned for Birmingham and Huntsville. Pickleball Kingdom is expected to offer climate-controlled indoor courts, lounge areas, training programs and youth development. If you're new to pickleball, it's the sport that's been showing up in rec spaces for the past few years. It's similar to tennis, but it's played on a smaller court with paddles and a plastic ball. It's either a smaller-scale version of tennis or a really large-scale version of ping-pong. As leagues and other organizations have sprung up, so have locations for Pickleball Kingdom, with clubs or plans for clubs in 16 states, according to its website. |

Today is the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season. Thanksgiving's in the rearview, Black Friday is here, and Chevy Chase is scheduled to sled into a vintage Wal-Mart parking lot every 15 minutes on some channel or another on your streaming service of choice. The more local traditions are starting back up as well. And one can be seen from a Birmingham interstate by tonight. AL.com's William Thornton reports that the seasonal lights on the Regions building are going into place today. The lights in the windows create giant images of a stocking, a wreath and two Christmas trees high above Downtown Birmingham. There will be a ceremony at 4:30 p.m. at Regions Center Plaza at the northwest corner of 5th Avenue North and 20th Street North. The actual lighting is expected to take place at 5:15 p.m. The images will remain until New Year's. |
