Los Angeles
In the 1980s and ‘90s, Reynaldo Rivera photographed house parties, underground queer clubs, and concerts in the predominantly Latinx neigborhood of Echo Park and downtown Los Angeles. The images beautifully document a Los Angeles that no longer exists. Some of these images are part of Made in LA 2020: A Version, not yet open to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions. In the meantime, drop everything and read this excerpt of Chris Kraus’s excellent essay on Rivera.
Also, this Saturday, LACMA is partnering with the Moth for a virtual story slam, inspired by Alex Prager’s hilarious (and freakishly realistic) installation of a holiday work party. You’re invited to tell your own story for the holidays.

In the 1980s and ’90s, Reynaldo Rivera photographed drag performers in Latinx gay bars, house parties in pre-gentrified Echo Park, and performers like Sade, Vaginal Davis, and Chaka Khan.
Chris Kraus writes about these photos, which captured an LA now long gone.
