A sure sign that summer is on its way

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has reopened its iconic Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive for the season. The 7.4-mile seasonal driving loop features beautiful views of Lake Michigan, the Glen Lakes, and the park’s eponymous dunes, much of which can be appreciated through car windows. Twelve stops along the way include picnic spots and panoramic overlooks. These are our favorite stops along the drive.

Morel mushroom season is in full swing

These edible wild mushrooms can be found in every county in the state, yet they can be tough to track down if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for or where to even look. Half the battle is just persistence, but there are a few tricks to this pursuit, too. 

See a special songbird

Among Michigan’s many natural wonders is a small, slate-and-sunshine colored songbird that almost disappeared forever. Kirtland’s warblers nest exclusively in just a few spots. Having nearly gone extinct in the 20th century, they’ve made a comeback, but are still considered one of the rarest warblers in all of North America.
