The Parenting Journey

Teenagers today are coming of age amidst social, environmental, technological, and economic upheaval, and parents don’t always know how to help their kids deal with such turmoil. There’s no perfect road map for navigating these issues, but today’s speakers are experts in adolescent mental health and want to help parents have better relationships with their teens. Clinical psychologist Lisa Damour wrote “The Emotional Lives of Teenagers,” after demand for her professional help skyrocketed during the pandemic, and developmental psychologist Laurence Steinberg released “You and Your Adult Child” at a time when more Americans in their 20s are living with their parents than ever before. In this talk, Damour and Steinberg take turns interviewing each other to help parents understand and empathize with what their kids are going through and provide practical solutions.

They discussed Common’s memoir, “Let Love Have the Last Word,” which examines love as an action and a tool for self-betterment and healing humanity. “It takes a lot of work to hate,” Common said. “It weighs on individuals or people who decide to do it.” Watch the two of them explore how art builds empathy and what it takes to meet hate with love, capped off with a freestyle rap!
