“Write first with a pen. It’s too easy on the computer to change a word, then forget what it was.” — Mary Oliver

The Writer's Almanac Extra

Your order helps support public radio.

In this week's EXTRA, we feature a collection of poetry from Mary Oliver, as well as poetry from Raymond Carver, Jane Kenyon, and Maxine Kumin. We also recognize the birthday of Ernest Hemingway, celebrate anniversaries for Mark Twain and J.R.R. Tolkien, and seek answers to life’s persistent questions.

Felicity: Poems
By Mary Oliver

Mary Oliver was born in Maple Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, in 1935. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, for her collection American Primitive (1983), and has since become one of the best-selling American poets. Among her many honors, she has received an American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Achievement Award and the National Book Award for Poetry.

Our most delicate chronicler of physical landscape, Oliver has described her work as loving the world. With Felicity she examines what it means to love another person. She opens our eyes again to the territory within our own hearts; to the wild and to the quiet. In these poems, she describes — with joy — the strangeness and wonder of human connection.

The Best of Guy Noir: Collector’s Edition

It’s a dark night in a city that knows how to keep its secrets, but high above the empty streets, a light burns on the 12th floor of the Acme Building, where one man is still trying to find the answers to life’s persistent questions: Guy Noir, Private Eye. Garrison Keillor’s tales of the hard-boiled, world-weary, yet surprisingly articulate gumshoe have thrilled audiences every week for more than 20 years on live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion. Now, for the very first time, 32 all-time favorite Guy Noir episodes are available in one collection with a wonderful souvenir booklet.

Prairie Home Love & Comedy Tour

Garrison Keillor will be hitting the road this summer with the A Prairie Home Companion crew the day after his 75th birthday. Garrison will be joined by the house band led by Rich Dworsky, sound effects maestro Fred Newman, alternating duet partners in Aoife O’Donovan and Heather Masse, plus Guy Noir, words from our sponsors and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. Join us for an unforgettable summer/fall evening of fun!

"Lake Wobegon goes on and there’s more to say about the Krebsbachs and Bunsens and the crowd at the Sidetrack Tap and Dellwood the sweet tenor who lost his faith. And Heather Masse and I have new duets to do and the Coast-to-Coast Show Band is ever on its game. And Fred Newman and I have an exciting 'Lives of the Cowboys' radio drama from Yellow Gulch with a B-girl and a crazed felon and me as Lefty. And summer nights in the Midwest are so glorious and when you hear a whole crowd sing 'My country tis of thee' and 'Swing low, sweet chariot,' it becomes even more so." — Garrison Keillor on what to expect from this fall's Prairie Home Love & Comedy Tour. Are you going?
