Dear Yogi,
The lower back is designed to stabilise and support all movement, and when it’s not quite right, daily life is affected profoundly – physically and mentally. Reportedly, up to a staggering 80% of us experience lower back pain at some point, and this is what brings many of us to yoga.
The five large lumbar vertebrae at the bottom of your spine comprise the lower back, which supports your whole body, allows you to move your torso and protects your spinal cord. This region sustains high stress and heavy loads no matter what we’re doing, so it's really important that we keep it strong and mobile.
Check out these 5 yoga poses to help improve and maintain healthy movement, flexibility and strength of the spine. Take your time to tune into how your body feels as you slowly get into each pose – if it hurts, stop – and let us know how you go with the articles below!
