LSU bows out in Elite Eight

Good morning from Albany, New York, where the LSU women’s basketball season came to an abrupt and emotional end Monday night with a 94-87 loss to Iowa in the NCAA Albany 2 Regional Final.

What was billed as an epic rematch of last year’s NCAA final, won by LSU 102-85, somewhat lived up to the pregame hype. But in the end it was much too much Caitlin Clark (she pounded the Tigers with 41 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds) and not quite enough great play from LSU that ended its season at 31-6.

“It was small mistakes,” said LSU’s Flau’jae Johnson, who had a team-high 23 points and made the regional all-tournament team with Angel Reese. “Those everyday things we do in practice. A bad pass here, turnover here, defense, mixed execution, transition.”

We’ve got a lot of content for you on the Tigers, so let’s get to it, shall we?

My column on the game as LSU and Kim Mulkey couldn’t find a way to crack the Caitlin code this time

My three takeaways (otherwise known as Three Points) on the game

Reese was in tears afterward, talking about some of what she has dealt with over the past year

Reese and Clark, two of women’s basketball’s biggest stars, shared a postgame moment (no hand gestures)

Ben Bolch, the Los Angeles Times UCLA beat writer who called LSU “dirty debutantes” in a Friday column, issued an apology

So did the LA Times as a news organization

Reese, Hailey Van Lith must make quick decisions whether or not to enter the WNBA draft

This might be what we call "burying the lead" for some of you, but the LSU baseball team dropped another one, its fourth straight, losing 12-7 at Alex Box to Southern. Maybe at this point you guys don't mind if I bury the news of another LSU loss.

And, finally, the LSU softball team is back in action on Tuesday against ULM before yet another big SEC weekend series at Florida.

That’s all from here. Thanks for subscribing and especially for following all our content on LSU women’s basketball all season long.

It may have ended now, but I hardly think this is the end for the Tigers as a nationally relevant program under Kim Mulkey.

Until I’m back on Baton Rouge time again,

Scott Rabalais
