If you're an LSU fan who limits themselves to football games, or perhaps the occasional trip to Alex Box Stadium for baseball, you're missing out. You need to get to the PMAC for a women's basketball game featuring LSU forward Angel Reese, who is playing this season at an All-American pace. You also need to get to the PMAC to see one of the nation's best gymnasts: junior Haleigh Bryant. Bryant, who has shouldered the load of leading LSU's team after senior Kiya Johnson went down with a season-ending Achilles' tendon tear, lit up the PMAC again Friday night against Missouri. She got a perfect 10 on vault (Bryant won the 2021 NCAA vault title and may well be the nation's best vaulter once again), tied a career best to win the all-around title with a 39.750 (out of a possible 40 points), and also won floor with a 9.95. And oh yes, LSU broke its five-match losing skid dating back to last season with a 197.150-196.525 victory over Mizzou before 11,965 fans. Our Michael Johnson has a photo gallery from the meet. And Michael was kind enough to come out to campus on his off day Wednesday to shoot portraits of LSU gymnast and social media superstar Olivia Dunne for my feature column on her that also ran Friday. As I posted this newsletter Friday night from a quiet corner of the PMAC, crews were hard at work on the floor dismantling the gymnastics equipment and putting the basketball court back in place as the men's team prepares to take on Tennessee on Saturday. LSU (12-6, 1-5 SEC) is on a five-game skid of its own and taking on Tennessee, which is one of the SEC's best defensive teams, won't make things much better for the offensively challenged Tigers. The LSU women's team was pushed hard Thursday by Arkansas and had its closest game to date. It was still a win however, 79-76, as the No. 3 Tigers pushed their record to 19-0 and 7-0 in the SEC. Jim Kleinpeter has filed a notebook looking back at the game. LSU plays Sunday at Alabama. Finally, track and field is back. The Tigers are on the road going fast and soaring high at the Red Raider Open in Lubbock, Texas. Well, let me wrap this up before they make me push the basketball goals into place. Have a great weekend, Tiger fans. Scott Rabalais |
