LSU's $1 million mistake

Oops.

Apparently, LSU overpaid Brian Kelly by more than $1 million during the 2022 fiscal year, a state legislative audit has found. The school has worked out what happened and how Kelly will get less money in 2023 to compensate.

According to the legislative audit, LSU made double bonus payments to Kelly then continued to make them for several months before the mistake was caught.

Kind of blows the "Bank error in your favor ... Collect $200" Monopoly card out of the water.

It's incredible to think that 1) LSU could make such a financial faux pas and let it go on so long, 2) LSU has so much money that a $1 million-plus clerical error went unnoticed for a such a long time.

How much money? Our Wilson Alexander takes a deep dive into LSU's financials from the last fiscal year, explaining where LSU made and lost money but ultimate came up in the black.

Back to sports. Jim Kleinpeter profiles women's basketball freshman forward Sa'Myah Smith and what has made her the first post player off the Tigers' bench this season.

I've got what will is now a weekly online feature for us, breaking down the NCAA Tournament projections for the women's basketball team. The Tigers are back in action Monday night when they host Tennessee in the season's biggest game to date.

Finally, maybe a game outside the SEC will help snap the LSU men's basketball team out of its funk. The Tigers look ahead to Saturday's home game in the final SEC/Big 12 Challenge against Texas Tech, a middling team in the Big 12 that nonetheless will probably be favored for this one in the PMAC.

That's all for now on the LSU front. Have a great Thursday, and may someone make a $1 million clerical error in your favor as well.
