| Lunar Fun: Shakespeare, Snacks, and Science
From nighttime neighbor to protagonist of myth and legend, the Moon plays many roles that you’ll learn about as part of your membership in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Calendar Club. | |
|
Dear Moon Watcher, Our closest celestial neighbor, the Moon, lives large in the collective imagination of earthlings. Myths, legends, folklore, and more than a few scary stories rely on the Moon as an integral part of the tale. The Moon makes an appearance in popular songs (“Moon River” and “Blue Moon,” just to name a couple) and dozens of movie titles, and who could ignore the most famous Moon myth of all, the story of the werewolf? While the mythical werewolf appears at the full Moon, did you know that there’s a real “werewolf” in the arachnid world? Scorpions glow in the dark because they have a protein that reacts to the ultraviolet light in moonbeams. While this might look pretty cool to us, it’s bad news for the scorpion, since their prey can see them when they hunt at night. Because of this, scorpions tend to be more active during the new Moon and seek shelter as the Moon approaches full. That’s no excuse to let your guard down, though, if you are among a scorpion’s prey. A truly hungry scorpion will hunt for a meal, glowing or not. Another insect, the doodlebug, might have a little werewolf blood, too. Doodlebugs hunt by digging funnel-shape pits in the sand, where they lurk at the bottom until their prey falls in. They dig new traps every day, but, interestingly, they dig bigger traps during a full Moon, even if they aren’t exposed to the moonlight. Of course, we know that insects aren’t werewolves. There’s no such thing. Right? We do, however, know that insects aren’t the only creatures affected by a full Moon. The facts suggest that dogs and cats behave differently during a full Moon. The Colorado State University Veterinary Medical Center discovered some interesting things about our four-legged friends and their relationship to the full Moon. Wondering what, exactly? Do you need to worry? You’ll have to turn to August in the 2020 Moon Calendar to find out. And the only way to get that calendar is with a membership in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Calendar Club. |

Moon Food | Long before humans set foot on the Moon, we were eating the Moon. Sort of. In 1917, Chattanooga Bakery salesman Earl Mitchell asked a Kentucky coal miner what he might enjoy as a snack. The miner described a graham cracker sandwich filled with marshmallow, dipped in chocolate, and “as big as the Moon!” From those humble beginnings, we now have Moon pies, which are a staple of Southern cuisine and a traditional treat every year on the anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing (July 20, 1969). | | Moon Literature | Myths, legends, and food. Is there anywhere that the Moon doesn’t appear in our world? How many writers have looked to the Moon for inspiration? We can tell you this: If you’re looking for mention of the Moon by one of the greatest literary figures in history, you might have a hard time finding it. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the only play by William Shakespeare to mention moonbeams. In Act 3, Scene 1, Titania, queen of the fairies, instructs her followers to attend to a character called Bottom: | “... pluck the wings from painted butterflies, To fan the moonbeams from his sleeping eyes.” | The Moon does appear in plenty of folklore sayings, though—especially sayings about the weather. Some of our favorites are “The full Moon eats clouds” and “Clear Moon/Frost soon.” And going all the way back to 1639, there’s this bit of weather forecasting: “Pale Moon doth rain, Red Moon doth blow, White Moon doth neither rain nor snow.” Scientific? Maybe not. Or is it? In either case, the Moon made another appearance in the literary world when writer Isaac Asimov made a few speculations about the Moon and its importance in human life. Join The Old Farmer’s Almanac Calendar Club, and you can find out so much more about Asimov’s theory—plus learn whether there really is a dark side of the Moon. |

Moon Science | The Moon is great for conjuring stories, and pondering life, but don’t forget that there’s some actual Moon science in the 2020 calendar! And what better place to start than with “perigee syzygy,” which you may associate with a supermoon. A full Moon near perigee can appear to be about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than one at apogee. The term “supermoon” was invented by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 but has since entered the mainstream lexicon. And what are perigee and apogee? Apogee is the point in the Moon’s elliptical orbit that is farthest from Earth. Perigee is the point closest to Earth. The closest perigee happened on January 4, 1912. On February 3, 2125, the Moon will reach its farthest apogee in 375 years! If you’re as fascinated by myths, legends, facts, and trivia about the Moon as we are, you won’t want to miss the 2020 Moon Calendar. Find out which two sports have been played on the Moon. Learn if it’s true that you can see the Great Wall of China from the Moon, and find out how many pounds of lunar rocks and dust have been brought back to Earth (and what happened to them). It’s all part of The Old Farmer’s Almanac Calendar Club Membership, which gives you a brand-new, full-color Moon Calendar along with all of the wit and wisdom that you’ve come to expect from The Old Farmer’s Almanac. |
