LSU coach Brian Kelly seems to be maintaining an even strain over this Maason Smith first-game suspension business. Maybe that's because Kelly already knew that Smith was iffy to see action Sunday in Orlando even if he hadn't been suspended for a game by the NCAA. Kelly held his first weekly news conference of the 2023 season Monday, and naturally the talk turned to Smith's status. It also turned to that perpetual theme of the past year with LSU football: special teams. Namely, who do the Tigers have who will make special teams more special — for LSU, not the opposition. I know, some of you cynics out there are saying they already made special teams better by removing former coordinator Brian Polian (now athletic director at John Carroll University near Cleveland) from the equation. That's kind of harsh ... but, yes. The third big storyline from Monday is of course the approach of Tropical Storm Idalia (probably Hurricane Idalia by the time you read this) to Florida. The storm is expected to make landfall well north of Orlando on Wednesday in the Big Bend region of Florida (that corner on the Gulf of Mexico where the panhandle turns into the peninsula) so hopefully it's game on for the Tigers and Seminoles by Sunday night. I've got my Three and Out takes on all three subjects as well, including when I think you will actually finally see Maason Smith in action. Over the weekend, former Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles dominated the storylines at the Xfinity U.S. gymnastics championships out in San Jose as she continues what looks like an inexorable march to the 2024 Paris Olympics. But three future LSU Tigers also competed, with 2024 enrollee Kaliya Lincoln finishing second to Biles with a thrilling floor routine. Finally, how quickly things change. NFL teams are cutting down to meet their opening day 53-man roster limits, and one of the cuts the Cleveland Browns reportedly made was to former star LSU kicker Cade York. The Browns expended a fourth-round pick on York in 2022, but he has had plenty of struggles of late. That's all for today, folks. Check back with us and keep on top of things all week regarding LSU sports and especially the run up to this big opener against FSU. We'll have all the coverage from here to Orlando that you'll ever need. Plus, since the game is being played in the vacation land that is Central Florida, mouse ears and a wand from Hogwarts.
