MAYA'S TAKE
January 15, 2020 is a day that will live in history books and be studied by scholars. House Managers solemnly and ceremonially walked articles of impeachment of Donald J. Trump to the Senate. Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images Pelosi’s choices themselves are historic. The day after the 7th Democratic primary debate with no person of color on the stage and an exchange about women being viable candidates, Pelosi’s dream team is the first to have both.
The visual itself of the first woman Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives flanked by three women and four men, two black and one Latina— from New York to Orlando, Denver to Houston— the House Managers are diverse, dignified and deserving. They are all experienced attorneys, and the one who is not an attorney, Florida’s Val Demmings, nailed critical legal points during the impeachment hearing; she pointedly asked two witnesses whether Rudy Giuliani was acting in U.S. national interests or policy in Ukraine. Both said “no.” AP Photo/Matt Rourke
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: VIDEOS
Lev Parnas, an associate of Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, talks with Rachel Maddow in an exclusive interview about the extent of Donald Trump's knowledge of the work he was doing to manipulate the president of Ukraine to help Trump smear political rival Joe Biden. (Rachel Maddow)
Parnas says that he believes Attorney General William Barr was in the loop on Donald Trump's scheme to get Ukraine to generate dirt about Joe Biden and his son. "Mr. Barr had to have known everything. I mean, it’s impossible." (Rachel Maddow)

Oh?
No No one should have to wait as long as Puerto Ricans have for disaster help. Now, after being shattered by earthquakes, the island is still awaiting its full disaster aid allocated after Hurricane Maria in 2017.
A federal judge today blocked President Trump’s policy allowing states and localities to refuse to accept refugees. The judge granted entered a “preliminary injunction” order, meaning the judge found it was likely to be unlawful.
Whoa Robert Hyde, the newest associate in the Ukraine saga emerged yesterday in Lev Parnas documents as an intimidating figure calling former US Ambassador a “B___” and referring to her surveillance and a cryptic reference to people who could do something for a price. The Congressional candidate’s response on Twitter has earned a “whoa” for it’s Trump-like quality.
Go ...to TheRecount.com for a mashup of impeachment news videos from today’s news. It’s the cliff notes version of TV and Cable news. Full disclosure, this is a John Heilmann (of The Circus fame) venture and he’s a friend. But I honestly like it.
YOU ASKED, WE ANSWERED
From Eulalie: Can Congress not go to court to subpoena all the documents that Trump has hidden in files so that Congress can review them to get the answers to so many outstanding questions? In addition, can Congress not go to court to subpoena Trump as a witness for the impeachment? Maya Wiley: Congress can serve any subpoena it believes appropriate for witnesses and documents. If the person or agency subpoenaed doesn’t comply, Congress can seek a court order or the person or agency subpoenaed can take Congress to court and argue it should’t have to comply. House Democrats didn’t take this route because they worry about court cases taking too long and they believe they have enough evidence.
Going after Trump as a witness is something they could do but it has never been done. When Bill Clinton was subpoenaed and testified, it was in a civil case and the Supreme Court said he had to. Here’s more you can read about it. Usually, presidents negotiate with Congress about testimony of senior aides, etc. Got a question for Maya? Send it here and she might answer in a future newsletter. She's guest-editing all week!
