The Trump administration is proposing the US become one of just four countries in the world to charge an asylum fee

Under the unprecedented proposal, a new $50 fee would be imposed on asylum applications, citizenship applications would see a $500 price hike, and a new fee would be added for certain immigrants who entered the US as children to renew protections.

The fee increases, which were first reported by BuzzFeed News, are included in a proposed rule set to be formally published in the Federal Register next week and will be subject to public comment before it is enacted, which could result in changes to the rule.

This mom's family was torn apart after she lost everything in Hurricane Dorian

Gina doesn’t expect to ever see her boyfriend, Avner, again.

Immigration officers had arrested him two days earlier near Treasure Cay, a gated community on Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. They grabbed him right after his lunch break, while he was walking back to his new job rebuilding houses that Hurricane Dorian had destroyed.

Immigration officers have been conducting daily raids in Haitian neighborhoods and hurricane-recovery sites, demanding work permits and residency papers as part of the Bahamian government’s ramped-up campaign against undocumented immigrants. In the past three weeks, officials have detained and requested to deport more than 340 Haitians who, like Avner, lack proper papers, according to a Haitian government official.

A judge adorably held a lawyer's baby while he swore her into the state bar

Belmont University College of Law graduate Juliana Lamar formally earned her right to practice law last week, and her 1-year-old son Beckham was among the people in attendance. But Judge Richard Dinkins offered to involve the baby, who had been born while Lamar was in law school.

"On the day of my swearing in, right before we began, Judge said he wanted Beckham to take part in the moment," Lamar told BuzzFeed News. "And I am so glad he did because to have my son take part in one of the greatest moments of my life was truly a blessing."
