Today is Monday. Temperatures will be in the mid-70s with sunny skies throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Some Maine parents turn to homeschooling as COVID-19 upends school

  • Some parents don’t want their children to spend so much time learning on a computer, while others simply found last spring that their children learned better in a different arrangement.
  • Players, coaches and fans aren’t the only ones eager to learn if there will be a fall high school sports season in Maine this year. Athletic training staffs around the state have been preparing to do their work amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The lighthouse was featured in the film "Forrest Gump", used in countless advertisements for companies like Nautica and Mercedes-Benz, and you seemingly can’t pick up a Maine-themed calendar without seeing a month dedicated to it.
Maine officials and the president find common ground in supporting current election laws
After a cancer battle, he had the burial he wanted — in his backyard

  • Luke Bryant, a jack-of-all-trades — husband, father, brother and son — wanted to live free. Free from debt, free from unnecessary complications and free from being told what to do. He died that way, too.
Charges unlikely in Deer Isle noose case because of lack of evidence, DA says
  • Someone removed the noose from a telephone wire by the side of Route 15 after a photograph of it was posted on social media, but before police arrived at the scene, likely tainting any evidence that could be used to investigate the case, said Hancock County District Attorney Matt Foster. The noose was discovered this year on the historically significant date of June 19.
On campaign trail, Sara Gideon pairs progressive policy and bipartisan rhetoric

  • Bipartisanship has been a hallmark of Maine’s Senate delegation, which has historically had an outsized role in national politics. Collins, a Republican, has often been named the most bipartisan senator and is the most liberal member of her caucus, though opponents argue she has tied too often herself to the party as it has drifted right.

These funny looking, fuzzy orange galls won’t hurt your oak tree, or you
  • Orange galls, fuzzy galls or fuzzy orange galls, no matter what you call them if you have an oak tree in your yard or on your property you likely have them. The culprit is the Cynipid wasp, a tiny member of the Vespidae family that lays its eggs on oak tree leaves.
