Dear Friend, I’ll get to the point. Our newsroom is one-third the size it was 25 years ago — and the state of Maine no smaller. Without BDN reporters digging into tips, following leads, and doggedly pursuing the facts every day, the quality of life in Maine would suffer. That’s simply a fact — and we need your help. To sustain reporting that makes a difference, we need to raise $55,000 more before the end of the year. Just a few recent examples of the power of BDN journalism: -
We showed what it meant for Mainers living with PFAS contamination in their land, water, or community. Local residents and readers from thousands of miles away write to tell us that our reporting is helping them understand what questions to ask to protect their family’s health. -
We highlighted challenges and solutions around housing affordability – and got results, too: A housing project rejected by Cumberland voters ended up moving to Biddeford after the developer read our reporting on the vote. -
We uncovered abuses at a Hampden residential care facility for disabled adults, shining light on licensing requirements for homes that provide care for a vulnerable population. -
We exposed a faulty environmental law: Popular “disposable” e-cigarettes (vapes) are considered hazardous waste at both the federal and state levels – but Maine offers no disposal options, and general disposal is causing battery fires at trash plants. -
We held law enforcement to a high standard: In investigations into the actions of a Maine sheriff selling weapons from his office’s evidence room, witness after witness testified that they learned about the issue by reading the Bangor Daily News.
We expect that community contributions will become an increasingly important part, along with subscriptions and advertising, of our ability to ensure our journalists have the resources they need to conduct investigative, feature and beat reporting, and bring you stories that celebrate our common human experience. To help you and others who value the Bangor Daily News secure the future of local journalism for eastern and northern Maine, Eastern Maine Development Corp. has offered to act as our fiscal sponsor, providing oversight, allowing us to accept tax-deductible contributions, and keeping 100% of every dollar raised in Maine. Will you make a tax deductible donation to help us reach our $100,000 goal? |
