Most energy insiders recognize that the transition to 100% clean energy will require a large percentage of distributed energy resources (DER) placed and managed at the grid edge. These DER will help balance a grid comprised of many inverter-based wind and solar resources. While today in the U.S. we have grid operators and an energy market at the transmission level, we don’t yet have a market at the distribution level. That could change. In Maine, new legislation directs the energy office to conduct a study to see if it makes sense to create a distribution system operator (DSO) at the local level. |
