Winter mountaineering presents many challenges and risks. But as BDN outdoors contributor Ron Chase writes, a well-prepared hiker can overcome those challenges and manage the risks. The most dangerous thing may be driving to and from the trailhead.

Big Wadleigh Pond is a 157-acre trout pond located in northwest Piscataquis County. It is a popular destination for trout fishermen, and one of only a dozen Maine waters that are home to the native Arctic charr.

Nobody knows exactly when the first movie was shown in Maine, but the odds are that it was sometime in 1896.
