The average professional spends 2.6 hours per day checking and responding to emails, but there are simple ways to significantly reduce this time, points out Matt Plummer, who suggests a once-an-hour rule. "Over-checking email wastes 21 minutes per day. On average, professionals check their email 15 times per day, or every 37 minutes," he writes.

Ignoring distractions is a mastered skill
Find what really distracts you in the office and make a plan to ignore those things during busy times when you have critical tasks to get done. "By having a direct talk with your co-worker in advance about needing to focus on your projects during the day, you can avoid hurt feelings and reschedule casual chat for times when it won't conflict with getting your work done," writes Robin Madell.
