Down under North Carolina: Why kangaroos can roam free in the Deep South Did you know itâs legal to own a kangaroo in certain states? Each state has its own laws governing animal ownership, with California and New York being among the most restrictive. States like South Carolina have traditionally been OK with exotic animal ownership, but changes to the law in 2018 have made it illegal to own creatures like wildcats, bears and great apes. That means up until last year it wasnât against the law to own any of these wild animals! But with the new laws in effect, many animal lovers have turned to kangaroos, who are still legal under the letter of the law. Owners liken the animals to âdeer on two legs,â and their behavior is fairly similar whether theyâre in captivity or the wild. So if youâre road-tripping through the South and see a mob of âroos on the horizon, donât panic! Nobodyâs breaking any laws. Curious to know what itâs like to own a kangar oo of your own?
