Hi John,
Tonight I celebrated a birthday with a group of old friends at a magical spot by the sea.
It's a makeshift waterfront outdoor cafe with no fanfare, no hype, and beanies + jeans are the attire du jour. Plus the wind whips through so parkas are also handy!
How it works:
Orders are placed at a trailer. With drink in hand, you find a seat around a fire pit (if you're lucky - we were!), and enjoy your own spread of snacks with a view of the cove, docks, sailboats bobbing in the breeze, and fish markets selling catches of the day.
People were playing card games, shelling peanuts, talking, wrapped in blankets to hold off the cold evening wind, and enjoying the live music.
It was low-key, chill, relaxed, non-fussy, and totally DIY.
Why do I share this?
This place was literally a patch of grass overlooking the ocean with a trailer, chairs, and firepits. The owner put her stake in the ground, declared it a cafe, set up a simple operation, and created an enjoyable, magical atmosphere.
The most basic setup has the potential to deliver meaningful results.
Similarly, with art, we don't need to overcomplicate things. If you've been thinking about creating art or carving out time for it, don't hold off until all the conditions are perfect.
Find your patch of grass, put your stake in the ground, and declare that it's time to create now.
See my p.s. below for a few ways I can help.
