Like all decisions about your health, decisions about whether to use complementary health approaches are important. Here are some points to keep in mind:

  • Be an informed consumer. Find out what scientific studies have been done on the approach that interests you.
  • Before using any dietary supplement or herbal product, find out about any side effects it may have and whether it might interact with medicines you are taking.
  • Talk with your health care providers before making a decision. They can help you determine whether a complementary approach is likely to be safe and helpful for you.
