Author and Crucial Learning co-founder Joseph Grenny explains several ways leaders can master the art of successfully navigating emotionally charged "crucial conversations." US men's soccer coach Gregg Berhalter built the team that played in the World Cup in Qatar on a foundation of honesty, collaboration and having tough conversations about performance and expectations. "As leaders sometimes we shy away from those difficult conversations, because it's harder to actually tell the truth than to just not have the conversation," Berhalter says.
It was the playoffs and we lost by one point, in penalty kicks. Kawai had been in the goal. Her friend Kailey -- a striker with a lethal left foot -- nailed the win with a low shot to the right corner.
The sidelines erupted. Kailey’s team cheered and screamed as she ran smiling into their arms. On our side, the girls were a mob of sobbing ponytails. I extended a consoling arm to the players nearest me and scanned the field for my daughter.
And that's when I saw Kiaha, striding across the field to his little sister, who was still in the goal. She had crumpled to the ground and was crying into her arms. I watched him as he bent down and scooped her up gently. She buried her face in his shoulder as he carried her back to the sidelines. He let her down carefully and her teammates circled her to offer their comfort and support. Kiaha wiped his eyes as he came over to me.
“I couldn’t watch her like that,” he said, his head turned toward the goal. “She was brave; she did her best. No way was I going to leave her on the ground with her grief.”
Leaders care deeply for those in their charge, US Men’s National Team Head Coach Gregg Berhalter says in today’s HR Leader story. They are compassionate and supportive. They deliver the truth, with authority and respect. Those they lead know they’re committed to the team’s success and well-being.
Wise words -- for those of us managing teams and for brothers who are their little sisters’ heroes.
