Good morning, folks. Welcome to the latest edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. If you haven't read this in a while because you haven't been as interested in the Saints, well, welcome back. The Saints are 2-0, have statistically the best offense in football and are the talk of the league. There's a lot to dive into after Sunday's 44-19 win over the Cowboys. So let's get after it: 2009 vibesAlright, maybe it's a little premature to dub the Saints as actual Super Bowl contenders — there's still 15 games left — but ... this offense is scoring points at a rate not done by the Saints since 2009. And that was too hard to ignore against the Cowboys, which our columnist Jeff Duncan captured so well. Dunc agrees it's way too early to actually compare this squad to that 2009, Super Bowl-winning team but there is one key similarity. "Dennis Allen’s hiring of Klint Kubiak to fix the Saints’ offense has produced the same kind of instant, transformative impact that Gregg Williams’ hiring had on the team’s defense in 2009," Duncan wrote. Our Luke Johnson also wrote about how the Saints' dominant win over the Cowboys was no fluke. Don't you forget about D Klint Kubiak and the offense have drawn all the attention — and for good reason — but our Rod Walker makes an important point: Don't overlook what the defense has done. The Saints' defense has been the calling card under coach Dennis Allen, and the unit made pivotal stops against the Cowboys after shutting down a lowly Panthers team in Week 1. "There’s a saying that iron sharpens iron, and it’s those back-and-forth iron-sharpening battles at training camp in Irvine, California, and at the practice facility in Metairie that have helped make the Saints offense and defense so good," Walker noted. Sunday's performance was particularly impressive since the Saints were without Marshon Lattimore, who missed the game with a hamstring injury. Kool-Aid McKinstry rose to the task in replacing the former All-Pro. Fast Carr Derek Carr has a 142.4 passer rating after two games. That's the best start to his career. Carr spent a lot of time after Sunday's game discussing the work he put in during the offseason to prepare for the moment, and that involved switching up his routine. For context, Carr's passer rating in his first two games with the Saints last year was just 80.2 What a difference a year — and a new scheme — makes. Anyway, that's all for now. The Saints have another huge game this coming weekend when they face the Philadelphia Eagles. We'll have plenty about that matchup on the site and in the paper, so please continue to check us out.
