Making Louisiana cane syrup the old-fashioned way

If you're going to turn Louisiana sugar cane into syrup the old-fashioned way, you've got to have patience. And Harold Schexnayder, 90, is a patient man. 

We spent a day with Harold watching he and his friends and family members mill and boil — and, of course, eating fried shrimp and frog legs along the way.

Here's a view inside the whole process, complete with photos of each step.


The much-anticipated — but also nervously watched — project to widen I-10 is moving forward in a big way next week.

It's going to affect both traffic on the interstate and on the surface streets below. Here's the rundown of what's happening, when and what it means for traffic. 


Southern University used to have a chancellor, whose job was running the flagship campus in Baton Rouge, and a president, which oversaw the whole system of multiple schools and universities. But the two jobs were merged years ago due to budget cuts. 

Now the university plans to give the main campus its own leader again. Here's how it will work, and what the search for that leader looks like.
