Forestry generates $21.2B impact on state economy

The forestry industry has a $21.2 billion impact of the state's economy, according to a report from the S.C. Forestry Commission. The commission said forestry provides more than 98,000 jobs and $4.9 billion in labor income. (GSA Business Report)

Urban Electric to expand North Charleston operations

The Urban Electric Co., an artisan lighting fixture designer and manufacturer, is expanding its Charleston County operations with a $10.7 million investment expected to create about 180 jobs. The company’s expansion includes a new facility in North Charleston’s Navy Yard that will serve as company headquarters and showroom. (Charleston Regional Business Journal)

Panelists say apprenticeships strengthen workforce

South Carolina is the national leader in registered apprenticeship programs, with more than 1,000 registered programs in the state, according to Amy Firestone, vice president of apprenticeship for the S.C. Technical College System. Thirty percent of the registered apprenticeship programs in the state are in manufacturing, she said. (GSA Business Report)

Goose Creek may start electric utility for Century Aluminum

Goose Creek could grow by 5,000 acres if a referendum to start a municipal electric utility passes next month, which proponents say would provide a boost to the city and allow Century Aluminum to nearly double its workforce. Santee Cooper, which provides electricity to Century Aluminum by contract, is opposing the move. (Charleston Regional Business Journal)
