| IMPORTANT | | ‘Diligent Search’ | Justice Department Says Trump May Have Moved, Hidden Documents A new filing by federal prosecutors on Tuesday has shed more light on the FBI’s search for documents at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, noting that “efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government’s investigation.” Despite Trump’s team pledging that a “diligent search” had been conducted and all documents handed over, the FBI’s search turned up three classified documents inside desks in Trump’s Florida office. More than 100 classified documents were found overall — and some were so highly classified that “even the FBI counterintelligence personnel and DOJ attorneys conducting the review required additional clearances before they were permitted to review certain documents.” (Sources: WaPo, NYT) |

| | | Iron Curtain Call | Former Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev Dies at 91 The Nobel Peace Prize winner was “a one-of-a-kind statesman,” U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said as tributes poured in from across the world. Gorbachev rose to power in the former Soviet Union in 1985 and opened up the bloc after decades of stagnation and isolation, peacefully ending the Cold War. He ultimately oversaw a messy transition period defined by popular revolts in Soviet states and the perestroika movement reforming the ruling Communist Party. President Vladimir Putin offered his “deepest condolences,” but has, like many in Russia, historically blamed Gorbachev for the dissolution of the Soviet Union. (Sources: NYT, BBC, Reuters) |

| | Detente | Calm Descends Over Baghdad After Al-Sadr Reins In Supporters Explosive violence in Iraq’s capital following the announced resignation of political leader Muqtada al-Sadr on Monday left at least 30 dead and hundreds more injured in clashes between supporters and security forces. The Shiite cleric demanded his followers disperse from the Green Zone Tuesday. “This is not a revolution because it has lost its peaceful character. The spilling of Iraqi blood is forbidden,” he said in a statement. The lull in violence is welcome, but watchers say the control al-Sadr has over the masses also sends a message to opponents as the political stand-off since October’s inconclusive elections continues. | | Disaster Response | Political Foes Thaw as Pakistan, Diaspora Come Together Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reached out to former Prime Minister Imran Khan as Pakistan struggles with devastating floods. “Let’s put together a united effort, let’s move with unity of thought and action, let’s move in unison,” Sharif said Tuesday. Khan — who was ousted by a no-confidence vote in April — has spent recent months fighting allegations of threatening the judiciary, military and police. Sharif’s message of unity has been embraced by the Pakistani diaspora, with more than $1 million in donations raised in the U.K. alone. “We’re receiving donations from Australia, America, the U.K., across Europe,” one organizer said. | INTRIGUING | | Historical Hostilities | Centuries-Old Remains Were Victims of Antisemitic Massacre Construction of a mall in Norwich, England, in 2004 unearthed the remains of at least 17 adults and children in an abandoned well. Researchers initially thought they’d died of starvation or disease, but radiocarbon dating revealed the bodies were dumped between 1161 and 1216. That led researchers to connect the remains to a bloody medieval pogrom in the area. “When we look at the DNA … they’re actually more closely associated to modern day Ashkenazi Jews than to any other modern population,” lead researcher Selina Brace said. The genomes are the oldest ever sequenced from Jewish individuals, she added. (Source: The Guardian) |

| | Streak Over | Snap Set to Lay Off 20% of Workforce The layoffs have been in the works for weeks after the instant messaging company’s share price dived more than 80% since the start of the year. Cuts will be felt across the 6,400-strong team. A hiring frenzy during the pandemic saw employee numbers rise 38% within 12 months in 2021, and there was an ambitious acquisition of AR supplier WaveOptics for use with Spectacles products. But none of that has been reflected in growth numbers — or profit. Snapchat remains wildly popular with 347 million daily users, but it has only once turned a profit since its 2017 IPO. | | | He’s a Believer | The Last Monkee Sues the FBI to Make It Open Its Files A decade ago, the FBI released a partial file including an informant’s account of “subliminal messages” in a 1967 Monkees show. But Micky Dolenz, the band’s last surviving member, wants to see the rest. He’s filed a lawsuit with the help of Freedom of Information Act expert — and childhood Monkees fan — Mark S. Zaid, who says that while the Monkees may have been less edgy than some of their contemporaries, anti-Vietnam war rhetoric had them firmly in J. Edgar Hoover’s crosshairs. “It’s not just a fishing expedition,” Zaid said. “I mean, we’re still fishing, but we know there’s fish in the water.” (Sources: Rolling Stone, Pitchfork) |

| | Buried Treasures | The Town of Sheldon Can’t Wait to Open Its Time Capsule… If only they could find it. The northwestern Iowa town is celebrating its 150th anniversary this weekend, but something’s missing. The time capsule was buried 50 years ago during centenary celebrations — but no one can remember where. “We think we know where it is, but to dig up concrete in the park when we have such a big event going on, we’re just postponing that to a little bit later in the year,” said Ashley Nordahl, Sheldon’s Chamber of Commerce director. Neighboring city Sibley had a similar issue earlier this year and hired a radar imaging company to help them out. (Source: AP) |

| | Uppercut | YouTuber Turned Boxer Jake Paul Lines Up UFC Legend for Bout The 25-year-old is set to meet former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, 47, on Oct. 29. It’s a much-needed opportunity to get Paul’s fledgling fight career back on track after a string of canceled events. He pivoted to pro boxing in January 2020 but remains a controversial figure in the sport. Still, he’s been remarkably successful, beating former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in a bout last December. In a sport known for its outspoken participants, Paul has been particularly vocal. He’s called out names like Conor McGregor and Canelo Alvarez as well as UFC president Dana White.
